It dawned on me the other day that it has officially been three years of no-poo shampooing for me!
THREE YEARS.
That's three years of water flowing down my shower drain that isn't filled with toxic chemicals intended to enhance the hair on my head. Three years of allowing my body to naturally produce the oils it's supposed to in order help keep my hair and scalp healthy. Three years of making a choice with my dollar not to endorse these companies that not only fill their bottles of shampoo and conditioner with chemicals but that also test these products on animals before they determine they are 'safe' for human use.
I am so happy that this has become a part of my daily life and to be making a difference for the planet and it's inhabitants.
I made the choice three years prior for the reasons above even after reading about the transition period that you and your hair must go through before your body regulates it's oil after many years of shampoo use. PS this transition period was not fun and many times I just wanted to have my soft grease-free hair back - but I stuck with it and I'm here today to tell you that your light, grease-free hair is not a thing of the past and is 100% achievable without the use of shampoos and conditioners.
I have even gotten to the point where I no longer use the baking soda/apple cider vinegar method, using only water and a good massage when I'm in the shower.
I love working in synergy with my body and having it work in the ways it knows how to. How it's supposed to and did until the modern world started developing.
Getting back the basics is such an important mantra for our home with everything from how our food is grown to the products we buy, the way we style our home, the way we tend to our bodies - it's all about creating that symbiotic relationship with your self and creating the best life forward. We need to start respecting our bodies for what they do for us every single day and that includes creating an environment in which they can breathe clean air and have fresh water that is free from pollutants to drink and all of that can begin with one simple change at a time.
It doesn't mean that you have to start with something daunting like suddenly eliminating shampoo from your life or selling your car, but instead make the choice to use a toothpaste made from natural ingredients that won't hurt anything in the ecosystem. Choose not to fill your sink when you wash the dishes and choosing to use a natural dish soap (one that uses minimal ingredients - not the huge companies greenwashing their products) while you're filling your dish sink halfway to achieve the same goal.
All of these little changes work together to create one big impact on the planet and once you can feel good about your relationship with that then the rest will follow.
The sustainability you can find within yourself by being aware of it's simplicity is that much more impactful. I started this blog to talk about these issues - it's right there in the name - 'Sustain' - and I fully plan to continue integrating this aspect of my life into the words I publish. It's a passion but it's also a lifestyle and even if you read this article or it takes you further to another it always comes down to the first step, something we are all capable of.
To the people who have committed to a no-poo lifestyle - let's high five about it.
To the people who use the natural toothpaste - we're gunna high five too.
To the people who have always thought about taking that next step - I'm here to lend a helping hand.
Here's to three years of no-poo shampooing and to many more of fighting for clean water.
